The Veggie Vault

As Summer started to make it's appearance this year, I thought it'd be nice to try out a new hobby - Vegetable growing 🍃
The only issue was that my garden is full of wildlife - birds, foxes, squirrels ... And my own cats ...
As soon as I plant something, I knew there would be one of them that would dig them up for food 🤦♂️
I decided to put my thinking cap on, and design a small pet proof vegetable plot 🙂

This little area behind my BBQ was the best place for me to start the project, so I started digging out an area where I would want to plant new vegetables

Because I had loads of weeds growing there, I placed down a bunch of cardboard to try fend off any further growth whilst I built The Vault ...

The fun bit starts here, where I made the frame for the set
I built it in such a way, that I would have 2 separate sets
You may notice that it's not a natural colour ...
I made the choice to treat the wood (using non-toxic paint), because I wanted to make sure it didn't fall apart in a year or 2 - also made it look a little pretty 😬

Next. I built the main frame, which I'd begin to attach the wire mesh
This bit took some time, because I wanted to ensure each piece was secure ... I even managed to sit on it 😄 (unfortunately don't have a pic of that one)

I thought the difficult bit was over ...
Then I tried working with wire mesh 🤭
After a little bit of a fight, staple gun in hand, I got the top bit added

I was happy now, I knew I could get this to work - So I made a couple of "doors" for the front of the Veggie Vault
I needed to make sure they would be strong enough to be opened and closed routinely, which is why I added in the metal corner brackets, and middle strut on each door
You can also see my struggle with the metal mesh in this pic 🤦♂️

The final stage just involved adding mesh to the doors and enjoying the fruits of my labour ... Or in this case, enjoying the Veggies of my labour 😀

After adding in a couple of shelves, and of course some vegetables ...

I'm pretty pleased with the results 🌱
I will add another post soon (hopefully) about my vegetable harvest - I think I'm going to have a mound of potatoes to dig out, seeing as they're growing faster than I can water them ...
